02/12/2010 - Secretary of State visits Boston

Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Rt. Hon. Caroline Spelman MP, visited Boston to look at local flood defences and understand the importance of Internal Drainage Boards and coastal defences to Lincolnshire. Boston is within the catchment of River Witham and the Drainage Districts of Black Sluice IDB and Witham 4th District IDB.

The visit included a trip to Hobhole pumping station operated by Witham 4th IDB, and Black Sluice pumping station and lock.

The Secretary of State discussed the siting of a Tidal Barrier to reduce the risk of tidal flooding to Boston with local representatives. The Secretary of State then attended a meeting at the Boston & County Club chaired by Mark Simmonds, MP for Boston and Skegness. Representatives from Lincolnshire County Council, Boston Borough Council, local Internal Drainage Boards, ADA, the Environment Agency, Natural England, and Anglian Water were present at the meeting.

Talking after the visit Stuart Hemmings, Chief Executive of Black Sluice IDB, felt the Secretary of State had "gone back with a positive view of IDBs".
