2025 Replacement of Wrangle Horseshoe Pumping Station
A condition survey of the 1959 Wrangle Horseshoe Pumping Station in 2022 confirmed that it was at ‘end of life’, and a replacement pumping station was planned for delivery in 2024. There were sufficient benefits in the catchment to trigger £6.8m of DEFRA Flood Defence Grant in Aid and construction began in 2023. Appropriate measures were taken to manage the construction on a site adjacent to the Wash, a SSSI and RAMSAR designated site, and despite a very wet 2023/24 winter, construction was completed in September 2024 for just £5.8m including a small (0.4%) contribution from the Board.

The New pumping station was officially opened on 30 April 2025 by Elisabeth Grant, wife of the late Chairman James Grant, during an inspection tour of the district that was attended by 60 Board Members, guests and staff. Ed Johnson the Board’s Chief Engineer, gave attendees the details of the project and the future climate change resilience achieved for local ratepayers by the new pumping station .
